Color Play Friday: NYC Tour Bus

Hello Hon,

I know you've heard from me a lot this week huh?  LOL, don't you love it, well, I love it.  It's been my happy time.  School and scheduling and one car and scouts, blah blah blah.... right, everyone it busy.  So today was a struggle but I decided to put on my big girl panties and drag my pitiful self out of bed.  I knew I had to make this post today because I said I would, honest and consistently.  Sigh.

Because I remembered it's Friday, that brings me to Color Play Time.  So thank you Trina and Lorinda for giving me another thing to love about Friday's (of course, date night being number one).

Trina's picture for this week was so vivid and exciting to stare at.  Add the fact that she was touring one of the most happening places in the world, New York City!  My daughter's dream was to visit or move there, I told her I would not visit her, lol.  I love the tights that Trina was wearing in the picture and they just made me feel like she was the apple of New York that day.  So I decided to make my palette fun and free.  Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately) you get to be expose to my wicky since of humor because..., wellllll, that's just how I feel today.  Funky and dark.  You're either gonna love it or hate it, either way is OK with me.  I embrace today's dark weirdness wholeheartedly!  Let me know what you think, by the way, today I'm wearing my thick skin, so you can be honest, lol.

I found this cool fabric designer in a random search, her name is Auntie Chris, you can find her at her website here and her Art Fire page here .  I think I’m in love with her, in a purely quilting crush kind of way.  The fabric that brought me to her site (I love it) I had to take out of the fabric choices because it was just too bold for the other designs, however, I did manage to find this one:

Okay the color scheme fabric choices, I know the craziest thing you'll see all day, all week.  But there it is.  I know what you're thinking.  She's crazy!  I don't care how she feels today, there is no way any sane person can make those selections work.  I never said I was sane, [insert evil laugh here] wahahah.  Challenge accepted and fabric ordered!  Stay tuned!

Farmer's Wife 1930's Quilt-Along

Good Morning Lovies,

It's Thursday (not Monday), so what else could I possibly write about that can't be covered on Monday's.  My newest project! I am doing a sew-along, rather quilt-along with the Farmer's Wife 1930 Quilt-Along Facebook group, you can find out more information here.  Each week the Angie, the administrator of the Facebook group and hostess of this quilt-along, from Gnome Angel chooses two block from the book, "The Farmers Wife 1930's Sampler Quilt" by Laurie Aaron Hird, for us to complete that week.  I will be posting about my experiences, pictures of my blocks, and my thoughts about the corresponding letters shared in the book for each block.  FYI:  I will be using Hashtag: #FQS1930FarmersWife and #FW1930 with the name of the block at the end, we will all be using those two.  I will also be using #WhimsicalFW1930 for my own pictures and posts about my blocks.

Each block in the book is attached to a letter that was written by guess who?  Yep, a farmers wife back in the 1930's.  How did I end up in this my very first quilt-along?  Well, my dear husband took me to a quilt shop during our anniversary trip in Tennessee.  While I was walking around drooling over everything and packing my basket full of little goodies, he was spotting a few things too.  He actually suggested two very good products for me, this book was one of them.  He was standing there reading it as I was oooh'g and ahhhh'g (yep, those are words, well they are now) over some quilts.  He then suggested I buy it because he thought I would enjoy the letters too.  He was right.  I read a few of them before the quilt-along started.  I did enjoy therm, but I decided not to read the whole book right then.  I wanted to be able to read the letters right before I start sewing each block.  I think that way I will feel more connected to the block and the writer of each letter.  Besides, I can use the 1920's one if I really need some letters to read.  Somewhere I spotted the sew-along starting on the Facebook group here.  I immediately signed up since we had bought the book.  Weeks later I discovered that the book I had was actually the 1920's version.  After examining our budget I went ahead and ordered the 1930's version.  I will probably be sewing with both of them.  The sew-along will last a year, but it's not a race.  Although two blocks are chosen a week everyone is expected to move at their own pace.  But, I want to keep up so I can make sure I will have one ready to quilt and enjoy in a year.

Some of it will be machine paper piecing, some hand paper piecing, and some machine sewn with measured blocks, maybe even hand sewn with measured blocks.  But it will be done!  I will be hand stitching because during those nice enjoyable car rides and to take a break from studying.

So, now that you are aware what the Quilty Thursdays will focus on (may also include some other quilting projects that pop up) I present to you my first 3 blocks from the sew-along.  After seeing these and where I was going with fabric choices I decided my quilt and the process with it will be dubbed "Whimsical FW 1930".  So when you see my post with that hashtag you'll know what it's about (and uh, so will I, lol).

These are my fabric choices.  I may add to them as the humor strikes me.  But for now this is what I have.  Of course the goal was to always to take the time to make a quilt for myself.  I always wanted a black and white one with red accents, that's why I had all those fat quarters stored away.  I was going to use the Day and Night quilt block, one of my favorites (churndash being my all time favorite, yep, I'm old fashion).   But decided to try that color scheme for this quilt.  My next farmer's quilt I will use older type print fabric.

Monday Madness

Hello Loves,

"It's just another Manic Monday, ooohhh oooohhhh...."

Well, things did not go off as planned for Monday but that's okay.  The important part is just to keep moving, right?

What's Madness today ~ LIFE!  Ugh!  But there are some cool things going on as well.  Oh, in case you didn't remember today is Monday Madnessssssssssss.   This topic has no main point but rather a time to share with you some of the things going on and maybe a peek into what will be posting the rest of the month.  

A new love is Periscope, I am simply loving this social media outlet.  If you have not heard of it it's a app that you download for your mobile device, and of course your IPad.  Think YouTube, but shorter and unscripted.  Also, you can communicate with your viewers via chat box.  This is a big thing, your viewers not only get to watch you but they can reach out to you with questions and ideas instantly are you can respond instantly.  Oh my word the things that are broadcasted are amazing.  People share all types of interests.  I am following people who are quilters, sewers, exercise buffs, foodies, social media wizzies (is that a word, I am referring to those who are social media buffs) and sooooo much more.  If you have not had the opportunity to check it out please do so.  My handle is @stephsgotit, actually you can find me on any social media as 'stephsgotit', as well as emails.  Except Twitter, some other chick is 'StephsgotIT' (I assume she works in the IT department), apparently she does not know I have coined and used that handle for everything forever!  On Twitter I am stephsgotitD AND Genoubee (my bellydancer name).  

I post at least every Sunday on Periscope.  I am participating in a hop, it's #SGS Sunday Goal Setting.  This is where we broadcast live our report on the status of the goals we talked about the week before and then give our goals for the next week.  It's like having a large accountability group!  I love that and plan to do it even if no ones watches it.  It really helps to hold me accountable knowing I have to report back to others.  I also participated in a hop for honest sewing room.  I was super nervous, but am learning to be more calmer.  Shhhh, I also make sure to used my doTerra Balance essential oil on my wrist & behind the ears and then Citrus Bliss or Balance in my diffuser to help calm my nervous jitters.  Lastly, the little broadcasts, did I mention they are LIVE, only stay up for 24 hours.  If you are not able to watch the broadcasts while they are live you have 24 hours to catch the replay before it disappears.  I am researching on some of the ways to copy the video to display permanently.  

Another hop I am staring this week is #ColorPlayFriday.  Two great bloggers that I follow on Periscope are doing this and have extended an invitation to any of their followers who want to join them.  Each week Trina at In An Otter Life (don't you just love that handle) or Lorinda at Laurel and Pine (unique as well) choose a picture from a Pinterest board where they have placed some of their pictures.  By Friday each person is responsible for creating a color palette and choosing fabric based on that palette.  Since they have opened it to their followers they have also opened it to whatever creative medium that you use, fabric, scrapbook paper, yarn, etc...  Even though I have all of them I am going to use fabric.  Lorinda also challenge us to make something with that palette and do a show and tell.  It's not required, but it's a nice idea to do something with the fabrics that we choose.  

And of course, there is still school. That was one of #SGS in my first broadcast, to create a more consistent school schedule so I could get some time to quilt and sew some fabulous clothes for Marvelous Monday's.  

Last Week' Goals:

1. Consistent Study Schedule
2. Start on my Farmers Wife 1930 Quilting Sew-Along
3. Finish my Postage Stamp mini quilt for the Crafty Gemini Quilt Club
4. Get the shipping cost for the extra pieces for the Elim Nativity set I sold this month (remember you too can own one of these sets, information here and 2 posts prior to this one)
5. Send out the invitation emails for our annual Nativity event at church 

How did I do?  decent, but still more work to be done.  

This Sunday's #SGS:

1. Make a dress or top & skirt for my son's military retirement event
2. Complete Blog entries and set up scheduler, since I know I have number 1 and Toastmaster's conference coming up
3. Get to post office and weigh that set (last weeks uncompleted), mail some hand made get well cards and thank you card
4. Work on my palette for #ColorPlayFriday 
5. Work on a speech for Toastmasters
6. Check on the grands and progress of my son's school work, it's all on-line and it does all the grading, tells you how long he was on, what section, everthing.  But I have to monitor him, he's not very good as self study yet

MIA!

Hello Loves,

I have so many sewing projects, quilting projects, knitting projects, DIY projects, refashion projects, cooking projects and YouTube projects just waiting to be done and/or to be shared.  This has a been an interesting year.  I've learned a lot, school will do that to you.  I have grown a lot, life will do that to you.  I've learned to trust in the Lord a lot, trials will do that to you.  I have even eaten a lot, greed will do that to you (and depression).  But here I stand today not interested in discussing the past, only to learn from it.  Today I am ready to move forward.

I still have life, school and so forth going on, but I'm focusing on good goal setting and a whole lot of "stick-to-it-ness", I heard that word in conference last year and fell in love with it.  Today (Sunday) I started in with this awesome Periscope Hop in which each Sunday we broadcast our goals for the upcoming week.  Then we have to report back on the progress of those goals and set new weekly goals.  Yep, accountability partners.  If you'd like to join or just check us out you can search using hashtag SGS (#SGS) for or weekly Setting Goals Session.  My name on Periscope is: stephsgotit (as it is for: Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, emails: @gmail.com or @me.com, Twitter is with a 'D': stephsgotitD, look me up anytime).  Life is just clouded with stuff, as always.  I'm working on not becoming "stufficated", another jewel from conference.  But to use my time, efforts, and talents to the best that I can to help myself; so I can be in a better place to help others.  (Shhhhh, and have more fun.)

One of the things I am set to start on Monday the 28th is the Farmer's Wife 1930's Quilt Sew-along.  I found this group on Facebook.  While visiting a quilt shop on our anniversary trip my honey found the quilting book and was reading some of the letters in the book.  He suggested that I get the book because I would appreciate reading it.  So we did.  Then weeks later I found the sewing group and decided to join.  Unfortunately by book was the one from the 1920's, which had different quilt blocks.  After reviewing our budget I bought the 1930's version and am now ready to begin.  I am going to use whatever fabrics I already have in my stash, as I am sure these women did.  You can also find quick pictures and steps of interest on my Pinterest board here.

I've also been having the best time getting to know the ladies from the Crafty Gemini Quilt Club, with Vanessa Vargas-Wilson, her blog is here.  If you don't know her she has an awesome YouTube channel and a new channel, Crafty Gemini Creates with Missouri Star Quilt Company (love me some Jenny Doan).  If you want to learn about quilting and various DIY's check her out.  The quilt club does swaps and I have learned so much and gotten to know some wonderful people.  I'll also start reporting on those and the projects that I create for them (not any trade secrets of course, but you are welcome to join for the club, you get your money worth and so much more).  I don't know why it did not occur to me earlier to share that with you, blockhead.  Of course you can find her on Facebook here.

No empty promises about what's coming to the site.  It's all about action, so you'll just have to catch my Monday's.

Elim Nativity Mission Project

Every year our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (you didn't know that, did you? LOL), has a nativity display in which all church's and members of the community are offered and encouraged to submit their nativity sets from around the world to be put on display for the Christmas season.  The various sets are beautifully placed together and open to the public for the first weekend of December, actually it's up and open in the evenings Wednesday through Sunday.  This helps to unite the community and to place the proper emphasis on the reason for the season, Jesus Christ's birth into the world.  Well, last year I ran across a wonderful story of one of the sets on display.

I was a new member of the nativity team last year, I'm the person setting up volunteers to be host/hostess' for the event.  So I was there everyday to open and to close the event, and happy to be there!  We had a guest come through that recognized one of sets, and I kid you not that are sets from all over the world made from many different materials.  She asked if we knew the story behind this particular set.  We (the hostess on tour and myself) said that we did not, but would love to hear it.  Turns out she had served in the area where this set had been created.  She shared with us the wonderful heart-touching story of how these nativity sets are made and what great blessings they provide for the families who joyfully create them.  I was so touched by the story that I made contact with the mission and became a Nativity Mission Coordinator here in the USA for them.  So let me share the story and the sets that I love with you.  Feel free to contact me by email me at Stephsgotit or here with any questions you may have or if you would like to order one of these magnificent sets, or several for that matter.

Elim Nativity Mission Project

The Nativity Project is a sewing project of Elim Christian Center and Bethel Church in Lwowek Slaski, Poland. This project helps to support needy families in this area. This area has a high unemployment rate.

After receiving inspiration, Elim Mission set about helping the families with a way that would allow them to create a support system for their families.  Many of the women of the area had never done handcrafts and certainly not sewn on a sewing machine before.   Elim Mission set up simple workshops to train the women.  Now these wonderful women are making the most beautiful handcrafted nativity sets I have ever seen.  They are not only beautifully crafted, but done with pride, love and joy by woman and their families who are now able to support themselves.    

Each woman is responsible for making one piece of the set.  For example one woman could be responsible for the Wise Men pieces, so she would make all 15 (I think that's the number I was told by the lady) of the Wise Men after the supplies have been delivered to her home.  The next time the truck comes she turns in her lovingly finished member of the sets and receives the packet of needed materials for the next set.  The finished pieces are then the responsible of a woman to lovingly and gently pack the sets to be shipped.  The is even a woman responsible for cutting out pieces.

I thought the following was great information to know. It tells you about the special features of the pieces and will be followed by various pictures of the some of pieces and sets.

Special Features:

1.      Mary’s arms are stitched together, but left loose, so that she can cradle her baby.

2.      Each piece is ‘Child Friendly”, which means that it feels friendly with its mixed stuffing, and useful in play to tell the Christmas Story.  The heavy bottom in each figure makes them fun to be put in various positions without falling.  Because of this…

• The Kings can be firmly ‘plonked’ facing downwards in a bowing position before the crib.
• The Shepherds can be ‘plonked’ backwards in awe of the angel’s Good News. The ‘rejoicing’ Shepherd (which is as “additional piece”) can have his ‘crook’ tilted downwards to use as a walking-stick. He can then be “plonked’ along slowly with one hand, as the other hand steps the stick alternately forward as a walking stick. 
• The Donkey can sit or stand - plonk him onto his bottom with back legs apart & front legs straight.
• The Camels can stand or kneel. Bend the Mother-camel’s back legs backwards, and the front legs front wards to make her kneel.  The Baby-camel’s legs all bend forward for kneeling. 

3.      The Angel’s arms have wire in them to use for praising, etc. The wings have wire in them to create beautiful wing positions.  You may use the Halo for hanging the angel above the stable.

4.      The ‘twin sheep’ appear to hug if placed ‘shoulder-to shoulder’, or as though kissing if placed “nose-to-nose”.  Place them ‘hugging’ in front of the crib and they look over the baby.

5.      The baby sheep. – Read this section under the heading “Additional Pieces’ to see what these sheep do.

6.      The Stable has a choice of 2 different colors and settings, one on either side.

7.      We have tried to sew facial expressions to represent the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit, (as listed in  the Bible in Galatians 5:22-23)

-                      Mary          - Love, Meekness

-                      Shepherds  - Joy

-                      All Kings    - Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness

8.      Inside the Baby’s filling has been placed the Bible verse John 3:16 which tells us the wonderful purpose of God sending His Son Jesus, which reads:

• “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will have everlasting life” 

9.      A complimentary Elim Souvenir Bag is placed in each Large Set, and the Set is Gift-Boxed.  The Souvenir Bag comes filled with Straw for those living in Europe.

10.  Each Set comes with a small amount of Christian Literature to encourage you personally.  (Information about the Mission Work is also available at request)

(Parents should watch over smaller children that they do not detach pieces, put pieces into their mouths or harm themselves in any way).

I leave you with my testimony of how thankful I am that I was present when that lady come through our nativity display.  I think this is wonderful testament of how the Lord will provide a way to take care of his children when we seek his guidance (and lucky us, he even blesses us when we don't remember to seek his guidance sometimes).  Elim Mission prayed for a way to help the community.  Once they received their answer to that prayer they proceeded to go to work to make it happen.  We are all God's children and he loves and cares for us.  If we ask him for help and do all that we can do he will provide.  Elim Mission is doing a wonderful service for this community and are a good example of being our brother's keeper.  What a blessing these nativity sets have been to the families and the mission, who serve all in that community.  

Elim Christian Center was established in Lwowek Slaski in Poland in 1992 through prayer and faith, with the vision to reach out with the love of Jesus Christ to the needy.

The Mission seeks to care for the spiritual and physical needs of the people in this region, believing that through this many could come to know that God really cares for them and to have the opportunity to meet Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.

They help the poor, the needy and the handicapped.  May God continue to bless them in their efforts to serve and share the gospel.  I am honored to be allowed to participate.
